International SEO for hotels: how to win the German, British and Nordic guest

Your hotel fills up with Germans, Brits and Nordics — but your website only works in Spanish. Or worse: it works in "translated" English and German, which is another way of not working at all. International SEO is the discipline that makes the guest in your source markets find you — and not just the OTA that has actually done its homework in their language. And the first lesson is an uncomfortable one: translating is not ranking.

Every market searches differently (literally)

The Brit searches for "boutique hotel Mallorca adults only"; the German for "Finca Hotel Mallorca" — a concept you wouldn't even phrase that way in Spanish; the Nordic mixes English with nuances of their own and plans months ahead. Same hotel, three different searches, three different intents. If your German page is the Spanish one run through a translator, you'll have German words in the correct order that nobody is searching for. Keyword research has to be done market by market: look at each country's SERPs, their "related searches", their seasonality in Google Trends, and what Search Console is already showing you for each language.

Localising: the step almost nobody takes

Localising means adapting the proposition to each market's traveller, not just the language:

  • Content that answers THEIR questions — the German asks about parking and cancellation flexibility; the Brit about transfers and late checkout; the Nordic about sustainability. The FAQs in each language should not be identical.
  • Destination guides for that traveller — "Mallorca in October", the restaurants, the uncrowded coves: content that captures the planning search, months before the booking.
  • Local trust signals — reviews in their language, media from their country you've appeared in, payment methods they recognise.

The technical foundation (without it, nothing else counts)

Language subdirectories (/es/, /en/, /de/), translated URLs carrying each market's keyword, correct hreflang so Google serves each country its version, and clean canonicals. It's the plumbing of international SEO: invisible when it's right, lethal when it's wrong — half of all "I don't show up in Germany" problems are a broken hreflang or duplicate content between languages.

Measure bookings, not visits

German traffic doesn't pay invoices; German bookings do. Segment your analytics by market and look at conversion and booking value per country: it's common to discover that a market with half the visits generates double the revenue — and that information decides where the next piece of content, the next campaign and even the website's next language should go. International SEO done well builds the most valuable thing a hotel can own: a direct acquisition channel in every source market, with no commission in the middle.
