Social media for luxury hotels: how to attract the high-net-worth guest

The luxury hotel guest looks at your Instagram before your website. Not to see the rooms — the booking engine photos are there for that — but to answer a subtler question: is this place part of my world? At the top end, social media doesn't sell nights: it sells belonging. And that changes every rule of social media you'd apply to any other business.

The account IS the hotel

A neglected feed does the same damage as a neglected lobby. In luxury, visual consistency isn't aesthetics, it's credibility: a recognisable palette, a way of seeing (natural light, detail, calm), and not a single post that wouldn't pass your general manager's filter. Better three impeccable posts a week than a mediocre one every day. Frequency is forgiven; mediocrity isn't.

What to post: the world, not just the hotel

The best luxury hotel profiles devote a significant share of their content to what surrounds the hotel: the local producer, the cove the noise never reaches, the chef's dish, the architectural detail. That's what turns a commercial profile into a magazine people actually want to follow — and following you is the micro-conversion that feeds everything else. Short-form video (Reels) is now the highest-reach format in this segment too, on one condition: production values to match. A shaky video with trending audio cheapens the brand more than not posting at all.

Exclusivity: give something that can't be had

You retain the high-end follower with access, not discounts: the season opening before anyone else, the new suite revealed first in Stories, a dinner with limited seats announced only there. The word "offer" degrades; the word "only" elevates.

Paid social: the right audience, not the biggest one

Meta advertising for a luxury hotel doesn't chase volume, it chases precision: frequent travellers, premium interests (gastronomy, design, golf, sailing), specific source markets, remarketing over people who have already visited the website, and lookalike audiences built on your best guests. With creative that reads as editorial, not advertising. The objective is rarely "book now": it's making the mental shortlist for the next trip.

What a luxury hotel does NOT do on social media

  • Post discounts and "bargains" — each one strips value from the rate on every other day.
  • Jump on memes and trends foreign to the brand — generic humour is the opposite of character.
  • Reply to comments with a template — in luxury, every public reply is service on display for everyone.
  • Buy followers — a 40k profile with 30 likes reads from the outside as exactly what it is.

The measure of success

It isn't reach: it's the quality of the audience and what it does next — website visits, enquiries, mentions from real guests, saves and shares (the metrics of desire). At staycreative we run social media for brands and hotels whose image is on the line with every post. If your profile isn't up to the standard of your hotel, see how we work or tell us about it.
